It is part of the Louisiana State University System. The medical school opened in 1969, with the first graduates receiving their degrees in 1973. Among the founders were Joe E. Holoubek of Shreveport and Edgar Hull, who in 1931 had been one of the founders of the Medical Center of Louisiana at New Orleans.
